Franklin is a city in and the county seat of Simpson County, Kentucky, United States The population was 8,408 at the 2010 census. Franklin was founded on November 2, 1820 on a 62-acre tract of land. This tract was purchased from William Hudspeth and was named for Benjamin Franklin. The post office was established on September 29, 1822, with Robert W. Simpson as postmaster. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.4 square miles all of it land.
