LOT Polish Airlines Flight 007 crashed near Okęcie Airport in Warsaw, Poland on 14 March 1980, due to mechanical failure as the crew aborted a landing and attempted to go-around. All 87 crew and passengers died. LOT Polish Airlines initiated their transatlantic routes in early 1970s. The officials decided to purchase the newly introduced Ilyushin Il-62. The aircraft which crashed was an Il-62, manufactured in 1971. It had been the first Ilyushin-62 purchased by LOT Polish Airlines for their transatlantic destinations. As all purchased Ilyushins, it was named after famous Polish historical figure, in this case - Mikołaj Kopernik.
