Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Elias Boudinot was born as Gallegina “Buck” Watie into an important Cherokee family in present-day Georgia. Boudinot was the son of David Watie, brother of Stand Watie, nephew of Major Ridge and cousin of John Ridge. Boudinot, the Ridges, John Ross, Charles R. Hicks, and his son, Elijah Hicks formed the ruling elite of the Cherokee Nation. They believed that rapid acculturation was critical to Cherokee survival. Boudinot was the editor of the Cherokee Phoenix which showcased Cherokee "civilization." Watie's religious education began in 1808 at the age of 6 while studying at a local missionary school. In 1812 he joined the Spring Place school in what is now Murray County, Georgia, Georgia. Around this time, Cherokee leaders were petitioning the government for aid to educate their children and show they were willing "to accept white civilization”
