Jack Mitchell (born 1925) is an American photographer and author, who is best known for his iconic images of artists, dancers, film and theatre performers, musicians and writers. Mitchell created lasting photographic images of individuals as diverse as Andy Warhol, Leontyne Price, Arnie Zane and Bill T. Jones, Jerome Robbins, Rudolf Nureyev, Gloria Swanson, Natalie Wood, Meryl Streep, Beverly Sills, Leonard Bernstein, Ned Rorem, Arthur Kopit, Edward Albee, John Updike, Tennessee Williams, Spaulding Gray and Truman Capote among scores of others. Mitchell learned basic photography from his father and by avid reading of photography magazines. He has earned his living from photography since he was fifteen years old. Also at age 15, his first nationally published photograph, a portrait of his oil painting instructor, appeared in The Complete Photographer.
