Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The history of Shanghai, spanning several dynasties in Chinese history, closely parallels the development of modern China. What comprises modern Shanghai was founded during the Qing Dynasty as a trading port. The city's importance grew since the 19th Century and has since then burgeoned to become one of China's financial centres. Founded in the 10th century, the city was located in a swampy area east of Suzhou. Until 1127, Shanghai was a small market town of 12,000 households. That year, however Kaifeng was conquered and many refugees came to Shanghai. As a result, the city soon grew to 250,000 inhabitants.
