Karl Lehmann (born 16 May 1936) is a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, Bishop of Mainz and former Chairman of the Conference of the German Bishops (German: Deutsche Bischofskonferenz), the highest representative post of the Catholic Church in Germany. Cardinal Lehmann was born in Sigmaringen, Germany, the son of a teacher, Karl Lehmann (d. 1986), and his wife Margaret, née Waldner (d. 1997).After graduating from the Gymnasium in Sigmaringen in 1956, Lehmann studied philosophy and theology at the Albert Ludwigs Universität in Freiburg and the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum in Rome.
