While cemeteries are a source of intense fascination for many people, there have been remarkably few serious attempts to study them as material culture in a thoughtful, systematic manner. Within the theoretical framework of necrogeography, this study identifies diachronic trends in grave marker morphology at two historic cemeteries in central Texas: the Merrelltown Cemetery, a Protestant Anglo cemetery, and Cementerio Guadalupe, a Mexican-American cemetery. The project is based on a previous study in which a generalized trend has been postulated for grave marker morphology amongst Protestant Anglo cemeteries in the United States that is in turn related to broader trends in architectural and cultural history. Two related research questions are addressed in the current study: Is the generalized trend observed in the previous study applicable to Protestant Anglo cemeteries in Texas, and if so is there any evidence of this trend in Texas’ Mexican-American cemeteries? The methods employed in this investigation and the resulting analysis will be of interest to cultural resource professionals and cemetery buffs alike.
