Roman Anatoliyovych Shchurenko (Роман Анатолійович Щуренко; born September 14, 1976 in Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk) is a male athlete from Ukraine specializing in long jump. His personal best jump, which he achieved in July 2000, is 8.30 metres. The same year he became, surprisingly, the bronze medallist at the Olympic Games. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, 46 events in athletics were contested, 24 for men and 22 for women. There were a total number of 2134 participating athletes from 193 countries. Athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and race walking. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly competed sports in the world.
