Joseph Michael Hilbe is a US statistician and philosopher, a two-time national champion track & field athlete, and Olympic Games official. He is author of several popular texts on statistical modeling, and is founding chair of the ISI astrostatistics committee and Network. Hilbe is an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hawaii, an adjunct professor of statistics at Arizona State University, and a Solar System Ambassador with NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He is an elected Fellow of both the American Statistical Association and Royal Statistical Society, as well as an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, for which he is founder and chair of the Astrostatistics committee and Network, the first global association of astrostatisticians, and chair of the Sports Statistics committee. In addition, he is also a member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the Bernoulli Society for Mathematical Statistics and Probability.
