It serves as a western bypass around Providence, Rhode Island. The southern terminus is a junction with I-95 in Warwick, Rhode Island. The northern terminus is a junction with I-95 in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Interstate 295 was also planned to be supplemented with an eastern bypass around Providence, to create a beltway.
