The population was 2,706 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the German city Bremen. The Town of New Bremen is on the eastern side of the county. The town is northeast of Lowville, the county seat. The first settlement was around 1798. Many later settlers were from Germany. The community of New Bremen was laid out in 1826 by Charles Dayan. The Town of New Bremen was formed in 1838 from parts of the Towns of Croghan and Watson.
