Telecommunication infrastructure has long become the backbone of any modern society, providing means for communication, entertainment, business, and education. Given the number of high-speed data link around the globe, their aggregate power consumption is becoming a concern for network operators, governments, local regulators, and ultimately customers, having to pay electric bills for their networking equipment. Recent research has shown that, among all network segments, broadband access networks consume more than 75% of energy all telecommunication network equipment today. Therefore, this book proposes the methods to enhance energy efficiency in optical access networks. Firstly, book proposes a novel estimation technique to calculate the ONU’s buffer occupancy and packet delay without any measurement device to measure the packet delay in the EPON system, which can be used to detect the eligibility of ONUs to enter power-saving mode without sacrificing user’s service quality. Secondly, based on this estimation technique, book proposes two kinds of energy-efficient scheduling methods in the EPON systems using a sleep mode and wavelength channel minimization, respectively.
