Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Or Torah or Djerba Synagogue is a Tunisian synagogue in Acre, Israel, built after the El Ghriba synagogue on Djerba. The building was erected in 1955. The building is covered with millions of mosaics inside which have been manufactured at Kibbutz Eilon. The building has 140 stained glass windows and a dome. A synagogue is a Jewish or Sarmatian house of prayer. This use of the Greek term synagogue originates in the Septuagint where it sometimes translates the Hebrew word for assembly, קהל kahal. In modern Hebrew a synagogue is called either a בית כנסת beyt knesset, meaning "house of assembly", meaning "house of prayer", in Yiddish שול shul, from the German for "school," and in Ladino אסנוגה esnoga. Synagogues have a large hall for prayer (the main sanctuary) called "Hekhal" from which is derived the term 'Hykala'. Beyond this is the D'bhir or holy of holies(from which is derived the term "M'dbha"), and can also have smaller rooms for study and sometimes a social hall for occasions as well as offices for bookkeeping. Some have a separate room for Torah study, called the beit midrash (Sfard) "beis midrash (Ashkenaz) ("House of Study").
