In French it was known as Grasse Poule.Finsterhennen has an area, as of 2009, of 3.56 km2 (1.37 sq mi). Of this area, 2.55 km2 (0.98 sq mi) or 71.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.57 km2 (0.22 sq mi) or 16.0% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.4 km2 (0.15 sq mi) or 11.2% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.04 km2 (9.9 acres) or 1.1% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.3% is unproductive land.
